Tallangatta residents should all have a say - 30/1/2009  Printer Friendly

Tallangatta township has a very exciting opportunity to potentially develop a new Community Services Centre; a central hub catering for people of all ages. The proposed centre will incorporate an arts and cultural space, learning centres, offices, and children’s services.

The lack of Children Services and family support in Tallangatta has been an issue for many years; a potentially critical aspect that impinges on residential attraction and further development of the township. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many young families who seek employment remain limited in their choices due to the lack of infant care and family support services available thus affecting the local economy and further township growth.

The proposed Tallangatta Community Services Centre and proposed new services have the potential to increase Tallangatta’s appeal to residents as the ideal place to live, work and invest.

To better understand what appeals to the community Towong Shire Council conducted a feasibility study in 2008. Recommendations for a Child Care Centre and an Arts and Cultural space to be included in the plan resulted.
With the feasibility study complete, Council aims to attract funding from the State Government however, prior to the final submission additional community input is sought from Tallangatta residents.

Two community meetings will be hosted by Council in February to gain a fresh perspective from the public and community service organisations. Service organisations will meet on Wednesday the 11th of February at 3.30pm and the public meeting will occur on Thursday the 12th of February at 7pm. Both meetings will be at the Community Centre in Towong Street, Tallangatta.

“Community consultation is a really important step in the development process. Council wants to hear from people of all ages in order to gain a broad perspective on community needs and desires for the township. This has the potential to be one of the most exciting projects for Tallangatta since it moved in the 50’s but it is now in the hands of the community.” said Mary Fraser, Mayor, Towong Shire Council.

“I hope residents will see the value in attending the community meetings, the feedback is likely to scope the future development of Tallangatta. Please invest the time to attend” said Cr. Fraser
