| Road construction is no longer simply about having plenty of muscle and grunt to get the job done. Towong Shire Council has taken a lead role by purchasing the latest earthmoving equipment. The new Caterpillar Grader and Loader will promote energy efficiency, reduce maintenance and provide state of the art performance in maintaining the Council’s roadways across the Shire.
Towong Shire Council’s recent $560,000 purchase has been welcomed by the road works staff and will be used for maintenance grading, road construction and road stabilisation, and for loading trucks from various quarries and worksites across the Shire.
“I am really impressed with the new equipment,” said Lloyd Butler, Tallangatta Depot Team Leader. “The cabin is air-conditioned and very comfortable, and operates with a joy stick instead of a steering wheel. The real bonus is that the latest technology doesn’t have the heavy maintenance requirements of previous models; it’s going to save valuable downtime.”
Both lots of equipment come with Tier 3 emission compliance for energy efficiency. The Loader is fitted with a fully automatic powershift transmission, automatic ride control bucket suspension system and comes with a new lifting jib attachment. “The outdoor team is enthusiastic about the new machinery,” said Gary Mawby, Director Technical Services. “It will make a huge difference to their daily workload. It’s more efficient and provides new opportunities for 21st century skill development. Council is keen to continue to lead a very efficient road works crew well into the future”. The delivery of the new equipment took place on the 28th of January by William Adams P/L representatives Grant Howell, Territory Manager, & John Merlo, Operator Demonstrator from Clayton Melbourne.
