| For more than 10 years, Towong Shire Council has provided exciting new career pathways for 20 school leavers through the Towong Shire Council Traineeship program.
The Traineeship program offers two diverse roles of employment in local government for a period of twelve months. The positions include an opportunity to work within Council’s administrative department or with the outdoor team. The administrative role teaches trainees a broad range of clerical skills including; general administration, customer service, records maintenance, and computing.
The outdoor Parks and Gardens trainee position enables opportunity to work with the outdoor team across the shire. Key responsibilities include the beautification and general management of Councils outdoor recreational and community spaces.
“Council has worked with many excellent trainees and most have moved on to further their studies or careers with great success. Council is pleased to continue the Traineeship program knowing the positive impact that we have had on so many young people’s lives. The program provides readiness for the next steps in their chosen profession.” said Mary Fraser, Mayor, Towong Shire Council
In 2009, Council offered two placements for the outdoor positions at Tallangatta and Corryong and one administrative role at Tallangatta. The Traineeship positions were recently awarded to Stephanie Park, Front Office and Customer Service Officer and a Parks and Gardens Trainees Lisa Blaubaum of Tallangatta and Jonathon Smedley of Corryong. Over the next 12 months Stephanie, Lisa and Jonathon will also participate and complete a theoretical component of their traineeship through Wodonga TAFE.
“I’ve just completed year 12 at Tallangatta Secondary College and I’m still not really sure what I’d like to do. My traineeship is going to give me exposure to lots of different areas of administration and Council activity and that really appeals to me. I’m happy to be living at home and love the work experience opportunities on offer.” said Stephanie Park, Towong Shire Administration Trainee.
The Towong Shire Traineeship Program is fully funded by Council and will continue to support future career pathways for local people.
