| A recent tour of prominent grazing operations in the Mansfield district was a great success. Twenty farmers from across Towong Shire attended the tour which was organised by the Upper Murray Agribusiness Group and Towong Shire Council as part of the “Grazing the Hills”
The overnight tour visited several properties and addressed pasture and grazing management. Project agronomist, Tim Paramore, was really pleased with the outcome. “Some of these operators are highly aggressive beef producers with a very clear focus on productivity and profitability. It was great for our farmers to see their operations and followed on from recent presentations and all the work we’re doing with our demonstration sites and pasture discussion group meetings.”
“Grazing the Hills” now has 11 demonstrations sites across all of Towong Shire. These sites showcase approaches to establishing and managing perennial pastures, especially on the rising and hilly terrain. The goal is to increase productivity and sustainability from these sites.
The Grazing the Hills project extends for three years until 2010/11. As well as demonstration sites, regular pasture discussion group meetings, newsletters and presentations, the project will provide a best practice manual based on trial work and compiled by Tim Paramore and Professor David Chapman from the University of Melbourne. This will be available to all farmers in the district at some time early in 2010. The project welcomes all interested parties.
