| Towong Shire Council is calling for applications under the second year of its Tourism Festivals and Events Sponsorship Program. Applications for the 2012/2013 program will be accepted until close of business on Friday March 30, 2012.
The Tourism Festivals and Events Sponsorship Program focuses on providing seed funding for new events that reflect the identified product strengths within the Towong Shire Tourism Strategy 2010-2013. Supporting new initiatives for existing events, particularly initiatives that work towards financial self sustainability, is also a main objective of the Tourism Festival and Events Program. This year, Council is also excited to add a new category of sponsorship for community-based festivals or events that complement the annual calendar of major events.
“Events and festivals in Towong Shire are a major part of the tourism experience,” said Cr Debi Gadd, Towong Shire Council Mayor. “Our Tourism Strategy identifies a number of our Shire’s key strengths and attributes that have the potential to be built on with new events or through diversifying existing events,” she said. Applications under the Program need to address how the event aligns with the Towong Shire Tourism Strategy’s identified strengths which are: Man From Snowy River country and history; history and heritage; natural attractions; outdoor activities (including cycle tourism, fun run, paragliding, etc); touring destination; and authentic experience.
“All festivals and events are different and require varying degrees of support,” said Cr Gadd. “To address this, Council developed five categories of sponsorship to cater for the range of event types and sizes.”
“One of the most important aims of this program is to empower volunteer groups to develop events that are successful and financially sustainable; this program will not fund requests for prize money.”
“We encourage groups or individuals with ideas for events to take a look at the Program Guidelines and Application Form to gain an understanding of what organisers should consider when developing an event,” said Cr Gadd.
