News>Council urges citizens to make a stand
| Council elections are looming and Towong Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Juliana Phelps, is urging community minded citizens to start thinking about standing for council now. “Becoming a councillor is a great opportunity to influence the future direction of the local community. The decision to stand is a big one - a councillor’s role is exciting but also demanding,” said Ms Phelps. “Prospective candidates need to find out what is involved before nominating for election,” said Ms Phelps. Council has joined a state-wide campaign to encourage citizens to consider standing for council and help candidates understand what is involved in becoming a councillor. “A dedicated website has been launched where candidates can check their eligibility to stand for council and find out more about the day-to-day activities of a councillor,” “Even if you are not able to stand for Council, if you know someone else who would be a good local representative, pick up a postcard from our Corryong or Tallangatta office to send them that lets them know you think they have what it takes to stand for Council,” said Ms Phelps. Prospective candidates can visit www.standforcouncil.com.au for information about nominating as a Councillor. A public information session will also be held for prospective candidates on Wednesday 5 September at 7pm at Council’s Tallangatta office. At the session, prospective candidates will hear from experienced councillors from nearby councils about what the role entails as well as information about the nomination and election process. Elections for Towong Shire Council will be conducted by postal voting during October. Voting will close on 26 October and votes will be counted on Saturday 27 October. | |
