Power outages
While Victoria has a very reliable power supply, power outages sometimes happen.
Outages and interruptions can be caused by a range of things, including:
- severe weather, such as lightning, floods, heatwaves, bushfires or high winds
- trees contacting power lines
- animals
- car accidents
- digging near underground power lines.
Restoring power is usually the responsibility of your local electricity distribution company, which owns and maintains the poles and wires bringing power to your home.
The Energy Safe Victoria Power Outages Guide outlines some simple things you can do at home to help prevent power outages. It also covers how to prepare for those rare occasions when power is lost for a long time.
