Demographics and statistics
Towong Shire is located in North East Victoria, about 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The Shire covers a land area of over 6,600 km².
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census Data, Towong Shire has a population of 5,985 people. The median age is 50 years, with 51.5% of the population being male and 48.6% being female.*
Most of the population is spread across the Shire, mostly in rural townships. The largest township is Corryong, with 1,348 residents,^ followed by Tallangatta, with 1,082 residents.~
