2020 Council Elections

In Victoria, general council elections are held every four years and it is compulsory to vote.

The conduct of council elections is regulated by the Local Government Act 2020 and the Local Government (Electoral) Regulations 2020.

The next general council election is scheduled for Saturday, 24 October 2020. The election will be via postal ballot with ballot papers being distributed from 6-8 October to enrolled persons.

Caretaker Period/Arrangements

Victorian Councils observe special arrangements during the period leading up to a general Council election.

The special caretaker arrangements that apply to Victorian Councils broadly aim to avoid the use of public resources in a way that may unduly affect the election result. They also minimise Councils making certain types of decisions that may unduly limit the decision-making ability of the incoming Council.

This year the caretaker period will commence on 23 September 2020 until 6pm on 24 October 2020. See Council’s Caretaker Policy for more information.
