Community Engagement Survey

Community Engagement Survey

Have Your Say on Community Engagement

Throughout December 2020 and January 2021 we invited community members to take part in our Community Engagement survey.

We received 89 completed surveys, either online or written.

Thank you to everyone who took part, your responses have guided the development of a draft Community Engagement Policy. The policy details the principles that will guide Council's community engagement practices.

What You Told Us

Through the survey you told us that we need to improve in terms of how we enable you to provide input into Council decisions. This includes:

  • Making it clear how and when you can provide input and giving enough opportunity to influence Council decisions that affect you.
  • When engagement activities are not held at a time or location that suits you, it is the biggest barrier to participation (67%). This means wherever possible, we need to provide multiple ways to provide input.
  • Community members most want to have their say on issues that affect; 1. their nearest town; 2. their local region.¬†
  • Almost 85% of respondents want to be informed about the decisions and projects that impact their community. If you have a view, you would like the opportunity to provide feedback.¬†
  • Community members were unclear of when and how feedback¬†they had previously provided had been considered. It is important that¬†we¬†'close the loop'¬†so you know that your feedback has been listened to.
  • Respondents told us¬†they would most like to hear about consultation activities by; 1. Email; 2. Council's Facebook page; 3. Printed and delivered newsletters.
  • Respondents told us they would like a mix of ways to take part in consultation activities. Some prefer to provide feedback online via a survey, while others prefer face-to-face through community meetings, connecting with a Councillor, or through a drop-in session.

Public Exhibition

As a first step to addressing your feedback we have developed a DRAFT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT POLICY.

The draft policy went out for public exhibition in February 2021 and we are working through your feedback. The final policy will be considered at the Council Meeting on 24 February.
