Effective 1 July 2025, Towong Shire Council is no longer the responsible authority for planning approvals related to the sale and consumption of liquor. This change follows the deletion of Clause 52.27 (Licensed Premises) from the Victoria Planning Provisions under Amendment VC286.
While a planning permit is no longer required for the sale and consumption of liquor, businesses must still obtain a liquor licence from Liquor Control Victoria. As part of this process, applicants must provide evidence that their licence application does not contravene the planning scheme.
Please note that a planning permit may still be necessary for other aspects of land use or development, such as operating a bar or restaurant, depending on the zoning and planning controls affecting the land. Applicants should consult with their local council to determine any additional planning requirements.
