Joint Statement from the Mayors of Indi
The Mayors representing communities across the federal electorate of Indi stand united in expressing our shock and deep concern following the attack on our Federal Member, Dr Helen Haines, in Wangaratta.
Our thoughts are first and foremost with Helen, her family, her staff and all those affected by this deeply distressing incident.
We stand firmly alongside Helen, her family and her team during this incredibly difficult time and offer our collective support.
We unequivocally condemn this act of violence. Violence, threats and intimidation have absolutely no place in our democracy or in our communities.
Regardless of political views or differences of opinion, every person has the right to feel safe, particularly those who dedicate themselves to public service and representing their communities.
Our region has a proud tradition of strong communities, respectful debate and people looking out for one another. These events are a stark reminder of the importance of protecting these values.
The communities of Indi stand together. We stand against violence and intimidation, and we stand for respect, compassion and the democratic values that unite us.
At this time, our collective focus remains on Helen’s wellbeing and supporting her family, staff and everyone affected.
Our thoughts are with Helen, and we wish her strength and the very best in her recovery.
The Mayors of the Indi Electorate.
