The Galleon in Corryong has been closed to the public since late 2024 due to the ongoing deterioration of the structure and safety concerns.
Council conducted an extensive safety audit and identified significant non-compliances to safe design standards. Considering the very significant cost to remediate and repair the structure, coupled with the non-compliant design, Council has determined that the Galleon needs to be removed.
The site will be remediated to green space with the date of removal yet to be confirmed. As part of this process Council plans to:
● make improvements to the existing playground and toilet facilities at Galleon Park, noting its connection to the Corryong Circuit trail
● install signage that acknowledges the history of the Galleon and the community’s contribution to it.
● explore the development of a new adventure playspace at a suitable location in Corryong
Council acknowledges that the Galleon has been a prominent fixture in Corryong since it was built by the Corryong Apex Club in 1988 to commemorate the Bicentenary. It also acknowledges the strong community effort to restore the Galleon in 2002. Council would like to consult with the community on how we acknowledge this history, and the preferred location of a new adventure playspace.
