Council's Recovery Team are visiting communities across the Shire this June and July. These sessions will provide an opportunity for those affected by the January 2026 fires to speak directly with Recovery staff about available support, assistance, agency referrals and recovery-related questions.

Resource Recovery Centres and landfill

Towong Shire Council provides a range of waste management and recycling services to support the community and protect the environment. Our Resource Recovery Centres in Corryong and Tallangatta offer convenient locations for recycling and general waste disposal.

Corryong Resource Recovery Centre

The Corryong Resource Recovery Centre and Landfill is located at, 289 Sugarloaf Road, Corryong, 3707

Opening hours

  • Thursday: 3pm - 5pm (4pm - 6pm during daylight savings)
  • Sunday: 12pm - 4pm
  • Closed on Public Holidays, on days of Total Fire Ban or when an Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger rating is declared by the Country Fire Authority (CFA).

Tallangatta Resource Recovery Centre

The Tallangatta Resource Recovery Centre is located at 767 Murray Valley Hwy, Tallangatta, 3700.

Opening hours

  • Thursday: 3pm - 5pm (4pm - 6pm during daylight savings)
  • Sunday: 12pm - 4pm
  • Closed on Public Holidays, on days of Total Fire Ban or when an Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger rating is declared by the Country Fire Authority (CFA).

Towong Shire Council waste vouchers issued to ratepayers can also be used 7 days a week at Wodonga's Resource Recover Center

What can I drop off at the Centres?

The following items can be taken to our Centres free of charge:

  • Paper and cardboard (must be flattened)
  • Plastics
  • Aluminium and steel
  • Glass
  • Batteries
  • Car bodies
  • Clean fill
  • Scrap metal and white goods (excluding those containing gas)
  • Waste oil
  • Chemical containers (drumMuster)
  • Empty and dry pain tins (with lids removed)

We also accept the following e-waste items free:

  • Household items - Irons, kettles, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, electric fans
  • TV and telecommunications equipment - Mobile phones, tablets and accessories
  • Electrical items - Power tools
  • Batteries - Lithium batteries, button batteries
  • Toys, leisure and sporting equipment - Propane and butane canisters for portable cooktops, video games and consoles, musical equipment, radios, remote control toys, and any toys that take batteries
  • Lighting - LEDs, fluorescent lamps and bulbs

Bulky items including but not limited to televisions, microwaves, fridges, computer screens incur a fee

Recycling sheds

Recycling sheds are also available for residents in rural areas:

Customers are encouraged to dismantle waste items prior to entering the Transfer Station so that separated materials can be deposited in appropriate areas.

Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM)

Towong Shire Council Resource Recovery Centres, recycling sheds or bins do not accept asbestos or asbestos containing materials. If you have materials that may contain asbestos:

  • Engage a licensed asbestos removalist for testing and/or safe removal and disposal.
  • For small household amounts, follow safety directions and locate a domestic asbestos-licensed landfill in Victoria or NSW (call first to confirm requirements).
  • Always package, cover and secure materials to prevent dust or contamination during transport.

Council accepts only empty and dried paint tins. Unused paint can be recycled through Paintback as the best disposal option. Nearby Paintback drop-off locations include:

Alternatively, you can pour the paint onto old newspaper and then dispose of those items in your general waste bin once the paint has dried (NOT in the green FOGO or yellow recycling bins).
