Councillor Code of Conduct

The Councillor Code of Conduct outlines the standards of behaviour and responsibilities expected of Towong Shire’s elected representatives.

It ensures that Councillors perform their duties with integrity, transparency, and accountability, fostering public trust and effective governance.

The purpose of the code of conduct is to:

• Define the roles and responsibilities of Councillors
• Promote ethical conduct and decision-making
• Ensure compliance with legislative requirements
• Support a respectful and collaborative Council environment

Councillors are expected to:

• Act with integrity and in the best interests of the community
• Treat all individuals with respect
• Conduct themselves in a lawful, honest, and transparent manner
• Avoid conflicts of interest and declare any that arise
• Work collaboratively with fellow Councillors, staff, and the community

Legislative framework

In accordance with the Local Government Act 2020 and the Local Government (Governance and Integrity) Regulations 2020, all Victorian councils are required to adopt a Councillor Code of Conduct.
