Electronics and e-waste
Electronic waste (e-waste) includes any item with a plug, battery or cord that is no longer working or wanted – from phones and laptops to power tools, televisions and lighting. By recycling your e-waste responsibly, you are helping reduce the risk of fire, recover valuable materials and support a cleaner, safer Towong Shire.
E-waste is banned from landfill in Victoria
Under Victorian law, e-waste must not be placed in any kerbside bin – this includes your general waste and recycling bins. These items can contain hazardous materials and valuable resources that should be recovered, not buried in landfill.
Placing e-waste in household bins also creates a serious fire risk, particularly from items containing lithium or button batteries. Fires can start in collection trucks and pose a danger to staff, infrastructure and the wider community.
Where can I recycle my e-waste?
You can drop off non-bulky e-waste for free at any of Towong Shire’s Resource Recovery Centres. Common e-waste items accepted include:
- Appliances (large and small)
- Mobile phones and accessories
- Televisions and screens
- Power tools and electrical equipment
- Batteries (lithium, alkaline, button)
- Lighting (LED and fluorescent)

Battery and device drop-off
For your convenience, small household batteries and electronic devices (phones) can also be dropped off at the Tallangatta Library or Corryong Information Centre recycling boxes during operating hours.
