Corryong CBD Streetscape Upgrade

We sought feedback on the draft plans for the project.

Maximising parking space and dedicated bike lanes were identified as key areas for further consideration during the initial consultation process in early 2021 and were also the focus of this phase of consultation.

There was strong community backing for angled parking and for bike access to be supported through the widening of footpaths as opposed to a dedicated bike lane.

Other themes during the consultation included:

• Lighting and power in the arcade to support events
• Additional street furniture
• Landscaping, trees and the management of planter boxes
• Finding alternatives to slippery surfaces to address safety concerns.

Final Plans were made available to the public following several months of community consultation.

Changes in the final plan included:

• Angled parking instead of parallel
• Additional furniture
• Landscaping and trees

As a part of the draft 2023/24 budget, the Corryong CBD upgrade was endorsed at the Special Council Meeting in June.

An EV Charging Station was installed at the Man From Snowy River Arcade Carpark.

We held a drop-in session to inform the community by showcasing the design plans, walk them through the project and answer any questions they had.

This was held Friday 11 August at the Corryong Library.

Unfavourable weather and requests from the Department of Transport for additional design details caused delays on work commencing onsite.

Work began in mid-September, including watermain and kerb replacement as well as tree and shrub removal.

The new watermain was installed and parts of the footpath in Stage 1 were demolished and backfilled.

In late October, works paused onsite while details were finalised regarding replacements for downpipes on the verandah posts and underground electrical conduits for street lighting.

Construction on stage 1 of the project was completed.

Work included:

• new kerb
• new watermain
• installation of electrical conduits
• replacement of verandah post footings and posts
• widening of footpath

To ensure a tidy Hanson Street during the festive season, the worksite will demobilise by 15 December (at the latest) and recommence in mid January.

This means temporary fencing, traffic control cones and signs will be removed and carparking will also be reinstated.

Construction recommenced on the streetscape after the summer break. Work will focus on the replacement of the watermain, which we anticipate to take 3-4 weeks to complete.

Watermains have been installed up until the end of the IGA. Council have identified six underground fuel tanks and are working to get them decommissioned.

Works will be demobilised from Monday 22 March due to the Easter break and the Man from Snowy River Festival. Work will resume from Wednesday 22 April.

Work will recommence on the project from Monday 22 April with work focusing on the decommissioning of fuel tanks. Once tanks are decommissioned, work will continue on Stage 2.

Works on the Corryong CBD Streetscape have recommenced after the summer break. Hanson Street between the roundabouts, is expected to be near completion for The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival on 10 April 2025.

We acknowledge that the streetscape works have taken longer than anticipated, and we sincerely appreciate your patience. We have faced internal and external challenges that led to delays however, they were necessary to ensure all works meet the required standards. We understand the impact this project has had on residents, businesses, and visitors, and while the process has taken longer than expected, we remain fully committed to completing the project.

Final works on the Corryong Streetscape Project are underway. Earlier this week, new lighting was installed along the Hanson Street median strip, and footpath works have begun in areas currently protected by green covers. Concreting at the roundabouts at both ends of the street is scheduled to begin shortly, with minor traffic delays expected while these works are carried out.

Tree planting along the median strip and main street is expected to commence within the next fortnight, weather permitting. Short-term traffic controls may be in place while this work is completed.

Council has been advised today that VicRoads plan to commence resealing works on Hanson Street from tomorrow Tuesday 17 June, weather permitting. These works are expected to take 2 weeks and may result in road closures, with diversion routes in place. We encourage all drivers to follow traffic management directions and take care when travelling through the area.

Council had intended to complete the resealing of the car parking in the main street utilising the same contractor to minimise disruption to businesses. Due to timing and cost, this was unable to be achieved. Council will separately contract the resealing of the car parks at a later date. When the dates for the carpark resealing are confirmed, this will be communicated to residents and businesses, and we apologise for the inconvenience.

Final installation of signage will be undertaken shortly as the project nears completion.

Seven trees will be removed in the CBD as part of this project. Their removal is necessary to install the new watermain. Additionally, their roots were posing a major safety hazard to pedestrians and the existing infrastructure.

15 trees will be replanted in their place, ensuring the street is even more shady and vibrant in the near future.
