Hanson Street Upgrade (Kiell to McKay Street)

Why is this project being undertaken?

Many of the existing trees along Hanson Street are causing safety and maintenance problems due to invasive roots and falling debris. Addressing these issues will not only reduce future maintenance costs but will also support a more welcoming and functional streetscape, with improved walking conditions, clearer parking, and healthier street trees over the long term.

In the 2025-2029 Council Plan, Council have committed to the following strategies:

• To maintain and improve our road and bridge network to meet the levels of service established in consultation with our communities. Council is actioning this through the upgrades of Hanson Street, Corryong from Sugarloaf Road to Kiell Street.
• To create inviting accessible town centres that provide excellent amenity for locals. Council is delivering on this strategy through:
  • Its strategic footpath network improvement program in urban areas including accessible access and egress for the elderly, school children and other critical paths, through replacement of existing damaged footpath along Hanson Street and side streets providing access through the heart of Corryong.
  • Implementation of strategic disabled parking that links to the strategic footpath for access and egress for older people throughout the Shire through provision of dedicated disabled parking spaces at key locations.
• Collaboration with schools, hospitals, businesses to resolve parking issues throughout the Shire. Through consultation and formalisation of parking spaces in Hanson Street, Kiell Street and McKay Street

Why a staged approach?

Staging the works allows Council to better manage disruption to your daily travel and parking.

This approach helps Council to:

• Keep parts of Hanson Street open while works are underway
• Manage traffic changes safely and maintain access to properties
• Schedule works around weather conditions and contractor availability
• Use feedback and lessons from early stages to improve later stages

For residents and businesses, this means shorter construction periods, fewer impacts overall, and steady improvements to amenity over time.

Stage 1 – Kiell Street to McKay Street

In Stage 1, Council will upgrade the section of Hanson Street between Kiell Street and McKay Street, as well as nearby side streets, including southern legs of Kiell Street and McKay Street.

Works include:

• Replacing damaged kerbs and footpaths
• Removing problem trees and planting suitable replacement species
• Improving parking layout and line marking to make parking clearer and safer
• Improving sightlines at the Kiell Street intersection to make turning safer
• Adjusting the existing right‑turn lane so it meets current safety standards
• Providing accessible parking near the Man from Snowy River Museum and nearby community facilities
• Minor drainage improvements to reduce water pooling
• Updated signs to support safer driving and walking

These works will help create a cleaner, safer and more visually cohesive streetscape as the first step in the broader upgrade.

Consultation feedback summary

Community consultation was undertaken in December 2025 to inform urban planting decisions along Hanson Street, Corryong, between Kiell Street and McKay Street.

• Two public pop-up sessions held at Corryong IGA and Davis Cottage on 16 and 17 December 2025
• An online survey made available to community members unable to attend in person

Three tree removal and replacement options were presented, ranging from full removal and replanting to minimal intervention. A total of 52 responses were received, providing a mix of support, concern, and suggestions regarding tree management, footpaths, parking, access, safety, and overall street character.

Overall, feedback indicated majority support for Option 1 - removing the existing deciduous trees and replacing them with more appropriate street tree species.

Based on the consultation outcomes and technical considerations, the outcome of the consultation is that:

• Option 1 be adopted as the basis for the Hanson Street Urban Planting approach
• All street trees on both the eastern and western verges be replaced with suitable species
• Community feedback be incorporated where practicable into:
  • The Stage 1 functional and detailed design phases, and
  • Future stages of the broader Hanson Street Upgrade project
